Hydroxyl Generator: How to Operate & Maintain Your Unit
A hydroxyl generator is a specialist piece of equipment used to assist with odour treatment and air quality management in a range of environments. Using hydroxyl technology, these units produce hydroxyl radicals that react with and help break down odour-causing compounds and other contaminants in the air and on surfaces.
If you're new to hydroxyl technology, our guide to What Is A Hydroxyl Generator provides a more detailed explanation of how hydroxyls work and where they can be used. It's also worth understanding the broader importance of Indoor Air Quality and the role air quality can play in restoration and remediation environments.
For technicians using a hydroxyl generator regularly, understanding how to operate, clean and maintain the unit is just as important as understanding what the technology does. Correct operation helps ensure the equipment performs as intended, while regular maintenance can help keep the unit working efficiently and extend its service life.
How to Use the HQ Air Personal Hydroxyl Unit
The HQ Air Personal Hydroxyl Unit is designed to provide adjustable hydroxyl treatment in a compact, portable format. Its settings can be adapted to suit different treatment environments and requirements.
1. Turn the unit on
To switch the unit on, press and hold the power button for approximately five seconds.
Once powered on, the display allows you to access the available operating settings.
2. Adjust the settings
Use the M button to scroll through the different setting options.
Depending on the requirement, you can adjust:
- Fan speed: The fan setting can be increased or decreased. A lower fan setting can significantly reduce operating noise, which may be useful when treating occupied or quieter areas.
- Run time: The unit can be programmed to operate for a specific number of minutes. Alternatively, the timer can be switched off so the unit runs continuously.
- Hydroxyl output: The hydroxyl setting can be adjusted up to level 7.
The appropriate setting will depend on the size and requirements of the treatment area. As a general guide, a normal-sized bedroom may only require a hydroxyl setting of 1 or 2, while a setting of 7 may be appropriate for a significantly larger area of approximately 120–150 cubic metres.
Always consider the specific equipment instructions and treatment requirements rather than simply selecting the highest available setting.
3. Wi-Fi mode
The HQ Air Personal unit also includes a Wi-Fi mode, which can be used for diagnostics.
This can be particularly useful when troubleshooting equipment or checking the unit's operation.
4. Allow the unit to run
Once the desired settings have been selected, position the unit appropriately within the treatment area and allow it to operate for the required period.

Hydroxyl Generator Maintenance
Like any piece of restoration equipment, regular hydroxyl generator maintenance is important for keeping the unit operating effectively.
Dust, debris and other contaminants can accumulate inside the machine over time, particularly when equipment is used regularly in restoration environments. Routine cleaning and inspection should therefore form part of the equipment's normal care.
After use, inspect the exterior, vents and accessible components for dust and debris. Keep the fan and air pathways clean and unobstructed, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning, servicing and component replacement.
Before carrying out any maintenance, ensure the unit is switched off and disconnected from the power supply.
How to Change the Globe on Hydroxyl MySpace and Personal Units
The globe is an important component of a hydroxyl generator and will eventually require replacement. The process is relatively straightforward, but care should be taken when opening the unit and handling internal components.
The following process applies to the OH Air MySpace and HQ Air Personal units. Always refer to the specific instructions supplied with your model.
Step 1: Open the unit
Unclip or unscrew the panel and remove the plastic cover to access the inside of the unit.
Use a vacuum to remove dust and debris from the internal foam-shaped component and wipe down the rear of the plastic cover.
Step 2: Remove the top cover
Using a screwdriver, remove the top cover as directed by the instructions printed on the cover.
Remove the screen to access the third panel.
Step 3: Clean the internal components
With the unit open, take the opportunity to remove accumulated dust and debris.
Vacuum or carefully wipe down the fan unit and surrounding areas, taking care not to damage internal components.
Step 4: Access the globe
Remove the screws on the side of the machine to access the existing globe.
The old globe can then be carefully removed. It may require some gentle movement or "shimming" to free it from its position.
Step 5: Replace the globe
Position the new hydroxyl replacement globe into place, ensuring it is correctly seated before replacing the screws.
Reassemble the unit in the reverse order, replacing the side screws, panels and cover.

Hydroxyl Generators: Common Operating & Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid
Getting the most from a hydroxyl generator isn't simply about switching the machine on. A few common mistakes can affect performance and equipment longevity.
Running the unit with restricted airflow
Dust build-up or blocked vents can restrict airflow and affect the unit's operation. Keep air intake and exhaust areas clean and unobstructed.
Always using the highest hydroxyl setting
More isn't necessarily better. The appropriate setting depends on the size of the treatment area and the requirements of the job. Start with an appropriate setting rather than automatically selecting the maximum output.
Neglecting routine cleaning
Restoration environments can be dusty and dirty. Allowing debris to accumulate inside the machine can affect airflow and equipment performance. Include cleaning and inspection in your regular equipment routine.
Ignoring unusual sounds or performance changes
Changes in fan noise, airflow or general operation can indicate that the unit requires cleaning, maintenance or professional attention. Don't wait for a complete equipment failure before investigating a change in performance.
Forgetting the globe
The globe is a consumable component and will eventually need to be replaced. Keeping replacement globes available and monitoring the condition of the existing globe can help avoid unnecessary downtime.
Keeping Your Hydroxyl Generator Ready for the Next Job
A hydroxyl generator can be a valuable addition to a restoration professional's range of air cleaning equipment, but like any specialist machine, it needs to be operated and maintained correctly.
Understanding the available settings, selecting an appropriate output, keeping internal components clean and replacing the globe when required can all help maintain reliable equipment performance.
A simple routine of use, inspect, clean and maintain can go a long way towards keeping your hydroxyl generator ready to perform when you need it.
